Trump Administration to Cancel Student Visas

US President Donald Trump is pushing to expel students who participated in pro-Palestinian protests on US university campuses and expel them from the United States. Several pro-Israel groups have supported his move. The most prominent of these groups is Betar US. The group said that they are providing the names and information of pro-Palestinian protesters to the Trump administration.

The Trump administration has detained Palestinian student and protester Mahmoud Khalil of Columbia University in New York and Indian post-doctoral scholar Badr Khan Suri of Georgetown University. Efforts are underway to deport both of them to their countries.

Donald Trump has promised to expel students who protested against the Israeli war in Gaza last year and demanded a boycott of Israeli companies from US universities.

Why Trump Cancel Student Visas Pro-Palestinian Protesters?

A video of masked and plainclothes officers taking Rumesa Ozturk into a car outside Boston, Massachusetts, has gone viral and sparked outrage online.

Ozturk was on an F-1 student visa and was pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Texas at Austin (UTS) on a Fulbright scholarship. On Thursday, US Secretary of State Rubio was asked why the Turkish student’s visa was revoked.

In response, Rubio said, “I’ve said it everywhere and I’ll say it again. If you apply for a student visa to come to the United States and you say you’re not just coming to study but you’re coming to participate in a movement that’s vandalizing campuses, harassing students, occupying buildings and causing chaos, we’re not giving you that visa.”

Secretary of State Rubio did not name the 30-year-old who participated in the pro-Palestinian protests. However, the student co-authored an opinion piece in the newspaper last year that called for his university to divest from organizations affiliated with Israel and recognize the Palestinian genocide.

Other Protests

Thousands of people took to the streets of Rabat, the Moroccan capital, to protest Israel’s ongoing air and ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. The protesters, who took to the streets on Sunday, expressed their anger at Israeli atrocities and denounced US support.

It was one of the largest demonstrations in Morocco in months. Protesters lined the streets of the capital, trampling Israeli flags and carrying banners with pictures of Hamas leaders killed in the attacks. Many carried posters of displaced Palestinians, including one with a picture of former US President Donald Trump.

Last month, Israel launched a fresh offensive in Gaza, breaking a ceasefire and launching a fierce offensive. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed and millions more displaced. Moroccan protesters strongly condemned the attacks.

Conclusion

The arrests are the latest in a string of actions against international students in the United States who have expressed support for the Palestinians. An executive order in January said the move was part of Trump’s pledge to combat what the administration has labeled anti-Semitism.

The White House has since withdrawn $400 million in funding from Columbia. The Trump administration has accused the university of failing to address anti-Semitism on its campus and has threatened to do the same at other universities.
